Being pure in heart is a blessing according to Matthew 5. There are 3 types of purity: primitive purity, evangelical purity and created purity. The civil man, although he may be moral, still would be going to hell. Happily, God is delighted when he sees the purity of His chosen people. In the innocent heart of the elect, the desire is to be sincere, to abhor sin, to avoid any appearance of evil, to rightly perform holy duties and to have a pure life in all things. They are impossible to separate. While the pure in heart adores wholesomeness, the unregenerate heart hates it. Unfortunately, the ignorant man sees no need for cleansing and is unbelieving, covetous and loves iniquity. The impure heart soaks in disbelief, yet the repentant sinner bathes in Christ’s blood which is a blessing of purity.
The promise to the pure in heart is to see God. Those who have eyes of faith in God do not need visions. They have God’s Word. When they reach God’s glorious heaven, the blessed Christians will never weary of beholding God. In heaven, the longer the righteous are there, the better heaven will become to them. Miserably, the unregenerate sinner will never observe God. The wicked will for eternity be unquestionably judged and tormented with their sins, while the pure in heart will dwell with God forever.
